Lessons that Mr. Tompkins learn

What’s the situation now?

Let’s start by a small resume of the situation. I’m afraid I will forget this part of the book if I’m not doing it (sorry to not trust my brain enough, if you’re not interested you can just skip this paragraph).

Our Mr. Tompkins woke up in a hotel room, in another country: Morovian. Mrs Hoolikan is here, and they talked about the job. First, he was sceptical to accept it but then after some discussions, he accepted it (money is sometimes the biggest argument in life decision, sad uh?). So, he will earn a lot of money and will work on the creation of software with great engineers. In the next chapter, he received a book that he will use as a personal journal (and that’s what we will use in our next paragraphs) he met a guy (Waldo Montifore) that will be his personal assistant. The guy looks super stressed and he is threatened by the NNL (the leader of Morovian) and he must work very hard on some project to achieve it on time if not, he could die (really a good CEO, NNL, isn’t?). To be sur to work for this country, Mr. T wants to meet THE leader to ask him some conditions (many employees etc.) to achieve his job goals. He is a tyrant and has a weird vision of managing people. They met, everything went well, NNL accepted every conditions.

The first lesson

He didn’t write himself de first lesson he learnt, Mrs Hoolikan did it for him.

“Four Essentials of Good Management

  • Get the right people.
  • Match them to the right job.
  • Keep them motivated,
  • Help their teams to jell and stay jelled

(All the rest is Administrativa)”

That was the lessons he learnt the day of the seminar. It was already said in the first revue of The Deadline, for him (and what I’m pretty agree with) to be a good manager, to success in your team project you have to place people in the heart of your management style. Without good people, and without managing them in a good way, you will never be able to achieve anything.

His second lesson

After meeting the poor and stress Waldo, he started to write in his book. His first writing was about the adaptability of the people you manage. For example, Waldo was so stress and insecure that he couldn’t think to any change in his work strategy, and without any changes he will not achieve his goals. To Mr. T changes, innovations, risks can be made when you feel in a safe environment. And these stuffs are essential to move forward in project. If you don’t take any risk, you will miss the benefits that can occurs too. To my opinion, Mr. T opinion is good, you must take risks in your professional career, or you won’t move so much but to take theses risks you have to feel safe. Being threatened, being power abused will never encourage people to be driver of change.

The last lesson (for this time)

This is about threat and the impact of threatening, after meeting NNL, Mr. T recognized other learnings about threatening people. Even if you made a threat, if the original time was not enough, it will never be enough. You need to be realistic, to let time to a project. After making a threat, if you still want to be respected, you realize it, so that’s something we should apply in our personal life too: thinking before talking. It avoids you to do stupid things, to hurt people. Many times, we forget how words are important and how much words have a strong power.
